The Kazakh SSR adopted its own criminal code on 22 July 1959, replacing the earlier republican rules. It punished unauthorised manufacture, purchase, storage, transport or sending of narcotics without intent to sell with up to three years in prison or corrective labour, and punished sale more severely. The code stayed in force until 1 January 1998, when independent Kazakhstan's 1997 code replaced it.[1]
