Hemp 🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Elizabeth I orders English landowners to grow hemp

Hemp made the ropes, rigging and sails of English ships, and the queen decreed that landowners with 60 acres or more must grow it or pay a fine of five pounds. The measure did not secure the supply: by the eighteenth century the government was alarmed enough to look to Canada, Ireland and India for it, and in 1804 the East India Company gathered papers on growing hemp in India for cordage.[1]
