Egypt first forbids cannabis

Cannabis and its preparations were forbidden in Egypt in 1868, one of the first modern attempts at a national ban. The historian Liat Kozma links the Egyptian campaign to public health and religious concerns, the country's image abroad and a centralising state's wish to civilise its lower classes.
