Tightening 🇨🇩 DR Congo

A Congolese province announces a formal ban on selling and using cannabis

The interior and security minister of Kasaï Oriental province, Patrick Mukendi Makanda, announced in a communiqué the formal prohibition of the sale and consumption of cannabis across the province, together with a 22:00 closing time for drinking places. The communiqué said cannabis smoking houses and late-night alcohol sellers had become meeting places where criminals planned their crimes, and threatened severe sanctions under the laws in force, without naming them. A year earlier, on 9 June 2025, 191 sacks of seized cannabis were burned at Mwene-Ditu in neighbouring Lomami in front of the city authorities.[1][2]
