A United Nations survey describes maconha in Brazil

The survey reported that under the narcotics decree of 1938 and the Penal Code of 1940, illegally selling, supplying, carrying or possessing cannabis carried one to five years in prison and a fine, and illegal cultivation five years. The federal capital recorded 53 seizures of cannabis in 1951, 49 in 1952 and 93 in 1953, twelve for every seizure of another narcotic. Clandestine growing was centred on Sergipe, Alagoas and Pernambuco in the north-east and Piauí, Maranhão and Pará in the north, especially along the São Francisco river, and smoking had spread from there to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.[1]
