The Ershad government banned cultivation in 1987. Sales were prohibited two years later. At Naogaon, where ganja had been grown under licence since colonial times, the ban left about 50,000 people from 7,000 families without their living; many turned to rice, mustard and vegetables. The government sealed the growers' cooperative's warehouses, which still hold more than 226 maunds of ganja.[1][2]
