A man caught late in 2020 by two plain-clothes officers with a half-smoked joint asked the court to strike down the prohibition, arguing that cannabis carries less risk of dependence than nicotine or alcohol. The court had opened proceedings in February and asked the government to justify the ban. It then declined unanimously: cannabis, unlike alcohol and tobacco, is covered by international treaties, and how to regulate drugs is for parliament. The decision was made public on 18 July.[1]
