On 12 August 2026 the Legislative Council voted 27 to 8 against a Greens motion asking the government to put cannabis legalisation to a plebiscite. The motion was moved by Rachel Payne and supported by Legalise Cannabis, the Greens, the Libertarians and Animal Justice; Labor and the Liberal-Nationals voted against. The vote was on the motion, not on David Ettershank's separate plebiscite bill, whose second reading had been adjourned on 29 July.[1][2]
