Tasmania completes the state bans on cannabis

Tasmania became the last state to penalise unauthorised cannabis use in 1959, after Western Australia in 1950. Every state then had its own ban alongside the Commonwealth's 1926 import controls. The penalties were borrowed from the opium laws, and cannabis remained rare in Australia until the late 1960s.[1]
