The United States closes its medical cannabis programme to new patients

Since 1978 the federal government had supplied cannabis to a handful of patients under a compassionate-use programme that grew out of Robert Randall's court case, and in the mid-1980s it was opened to people with AIDS. Under President George H. W. Bush it stopped taking new patients. Forty-three people had been approved; 28 of them never received any. At its peak fifteen people were supplied, and four still were in 2011.[1]
