ABC Pacific reported that nearly 40 per cent of Tonga's prison inmates were serving drug-related sentences, and that the prison population had risen from about 250 to 300 in three years. The figure covers all drugs, not cannabis alone. The police commissioner separately said in February 2026 that the drug problem was smaller than some feared and proposed wastewater testing.[1]
