Madagascar's gendarmerie seizes 53 tonnes of cannabis in a year

The Gendarmerie Nationale seized close to 53 tonnes of cannabis during 2020. An Antsiranana operation in May and June seized more than 16 tonnes, destroyed over 80,000 plants and led to 80 arrests; another operation burned more than 100 hectares at Analabe in July. A GI-TOC investigation found that cannabis supplied rural livelihoods and domestic markets while officers described difficulties policing armed trafficking groups in remote growing areas.[1]
