In the 1960s Rastafari from the Caribbean began to settle on land near Shashamane that Emperor Haile Selassie had set aside for them. The town later became known for growing cannabis, mostly for local use; an American report of 1998 described moderate quantities grown in the area. The law made no exception for the settlers.[1]
