Debate 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic

A Dominican senator proposes ending prison for drug users

The Senate took up a bill by Senator Edward Espiritusanto of La Romana to amend Article 75 of Law 50-88. Under the law in force, simple possession carries six months to two years in prison and a fine of 1,500 to 2,500 pesos. The bill would remove prison for possession or consumption and have the authorities refer the person to evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation or harm-reduction programmes under health ministry protocols. Penalties for distributors (3 to 10 years), traffickers (5 to 20 years) and financiers (30 years) would stay as they are.[1]
