The Senate orders a full inquiry into narcotics

The Senate authorised its Judiciary Committee to study the narcotics problem, including marijuana. Chaired by Price Daniel of Texas, the subcommittee held hearings across the country and in 1956 proposed even higher penalties, an end to talk of opiate clinics and the removal of addicts from society. Its work led to the Narcotic Control Act of 1956.[1]
