Tajikistan replaces its Soviet-era criminal code

A new Criminal Code took effect on 1 September 1998, replacing the code adopted in 1961 and its intervening amendments.[1] Its commencement resolution also required courts to reconsider earlier sentences where the new rules removed criminal liability or reduced punishment.[1] A separate general drug-control law followed in December 1999.[2]
