In a legal prescription programme backed by the newspaper Expressen, about 120 people received amphetamine and opiates: some four million doses of amphetamine and 600,000 of opiates in two years. Drugs leaked to others, and the project was ended in 1967 after a young woman died of an overdose in a participant's flat. The physician Nils Bejerot, who had opposed it, became the founding figure of Sweden's restrictive policy.[1]
