Lebanon plans to wean Bekaa farmers off hashish

The Hrawi cabinet approved 6 million dollars for a "green plan" of irrigation and fertiliser to help farmers in the Bekaa grow fruit and vegetables instead. The agriculture minister, Mohsen Dalloul, said 20 per cent of farmers grew hashish; a US drug official put Lebanon's share of the world hashish market at 20 per cent, 12 to 15 tonnes a year.[1]
