French deputies from four groups propose a state cannabis monopoly

A bill to create a state monopoly on the production and sale of cannabis was tabled by deputies from four political groups, including the governing party. In January 2017, 150 public figures in Marseille, among them lawyers, judges and doctors, had called for controlled legalisation, saying that most of the city's gangland killings were tied to the cannabis trade. A poll in 2021 found 51 per cent of the French in favour of decriminalisation.[1]
