Grenada's revolutionary government cracks down on ganja
After the 1979 coup — in which Rastafarian growers and distributors had played an influential part — the new government decided to clamp down on marijuana growing, and in 1980 it violently broke up a demonstration by growers.[@1,3] The government distinguished small Rastafarian plots from large-scale production for international distribution, which clear-cut forests and ruined peasants' farms, and asked Rastas to help rein the big producers in.[@2] The big growers marched in May 1980, warning that ending large-scale production would lead to outlawing smoking itself.[@2]
