description
The area cleared underLaunched in 1994, Operation Burn the Weeds became the title of Nigeria's ongoing eradication programme at a time when cannabis was cultivated in all 36 states — though the plant had been introduced only after the Second World War.[@2] The area cleared peaked at 3,500 hectares in 1999; after that peak, and contrary to some international reports, relatively little was eradicated in the early 2000s, with 2005 figures suggesting renewed attention.[@2] Cannabis of Nigerian origin was trafficked onward to other West African countries.[@2]
