Albania seizes 21 tonnes of cannabis in a year

description

The 21.2 tonnes seized were nearly twice the amount of 2011. In 2013 the state police tried to stop production in the village of Lazarat and met armed resistance from residents: one officer described indiscriminate fire from 20 positions with heavy machine guns, and a 70-year-old grandmother shooting at police.[@2] Italian financial police have estimated the country's output at about 900 tonnes, worth some 4.5 billion euros.[@1]

context › recreational › text

There is no legal recreational supply. A small single dose for personal use is exempt, assessed case by case with no fixed gram limit; anything more brings prison terms of several years.[@shteg] Use alone is not punished within the dose, but growing and supply are serious crimes, and the 2023 licensing law aims at export.[@shteg,kp,mjb]
