After taking the town of Akhtarin, north of Aleppo, from the Free Syrian Army, fighters of the Islamic State cut down a field of cannabis, soaked it in fuel and set it alight for the camera. Across the rebel-held north a cannabis economy had grown up in three years of war: in Jabal al-Zawiya, in Idlib, hills once known for olives were reported to grow almost nothing else, and the crop paid for weapons.[1]
