Greek police files record about three thousand hashish users

Psychiatrists from the University of Athens searched the files of the narcotics units of Athens, Piraeus and the Athens suburbs for 1958 to 1973. They found 3,696 drug users, of whom 3,128 were men using only hashish, 330 heroin users and 186 foreigners. They wrote that the laws had grown steadily harsher since 1932, but were not strictly enforced until the civil war ended in 1950. By the early 1970s they allowed one to ten years in prison, fines of up to 10 million drachmas, loss of a driving licence for life and a ban on foreign travel.[1]
