Refugees and soldiers from Asia Minor spread hashish in Greece

After the defeat in Asia Minor, returning soldiers brought back hashish habits picked up in Turkey, and about one and a half million Greek refugees were resettled, many in the slums of Tavros, Kokkinia and Drapetsona around Athens and Piraeus. Hashish smoking and the tekedes, the cafes where it was smoked, flourished in the 1920s despite the law, alongside rebetiko music.[1]
